The Committed -- Viet Thanh Nguyen

This book was overwhelming. The Committed is a tour de force that is both exhausting and exhilarating. At times horrifying, at other times laugh out loud funny. The main character is the unnamed spy of The Sympathizer, but now he is a man of two minds who has found himself a gangster in 1980s Paris. Now named Vo Danh, or nameless, he is a shape-shifter: Vietnamese, French, American, soldier, academic, Japanese tourist, waiter, hoodlum, killer, communist, capitalist, spy. It is a story of confusion, revolution, friendship, commitment, addiction, sanity, war, family and philosophy. As the sentences spun over pages, I sometimes lost my way, but the story propelled forward through escapades, violence and mishap. The publisher describes the book as suspenseful and existential, and I would agree. All in all, it's kind of a crazy read.
