Night Boat to Tangier -- Kevin Barry
Although the book takes place in a ferry station in the Spanish port of Algeciras, the Irish characters persist in their essential Irishness. I really liked this book, even though Maurice Hearne and Charlie Redmond are not really likable characters. Ex drug dealer, junkie, lowlifes is more like it. But , I found myself entranced. As the book moves back and forth in time, from their past lives, to their current moment of sadness, I wanted to keep knowing more. That Dilly, the daughter they are looking for, never connects makes sense. There was a faint feeling of hope at the end, but there was also the sense that not all darkness is a bad thing. Very interesting read.
