My plan had been to read a classic each year, but instead I am more the cult classic type. Like Lives of the Saints by Nancy Leman, my other of the cult classic genre, Brother of the More Famous Jack is a somewhat odd coming-of-age story. I remember being young like the narrator Katherine and being drawn into the lives of a cool family. Willing, beautiful, and from a middle-class upbringing Katherine is swept up by the esoteric Goldmans. The book started slowly for me, but as I got to know Katherine, I took a trip down memory lane. Growing up, getting smarter, being with the wrong guy, then another wrong guy, and finally finding what fits, Katherine is smart, funny, and introspective. The Goldmans are interesting, but also in their way, mean to each other. Brother of a More Famous Jack is a learning experience in becoming yourself.
