A dystopian novel with a heart of gold. In a near future where violence, drugs, and disillusion thrive, Rainy and his wife Lark live a charmed existence. She owns a bookstore, he happily plays bass. But, of course, that can't last. I Cheerfully Refuse has intrigue, heartache and danger, but those are tempered by Enger's telling of the story. With an almost fairy-tale quality, he has you believe that some good still remains in the world. The title grabbed me, the story kept me rolling along. I loved it!
