I've read two novels by Catherine Newman and I declare her the queen of the poignant family story. Sandwich is full of tears and laughter. It's a novel so brimming with love and togetherness, mixed with a slightly existential backstory, that you wonder how Newman had the energy to get it out without collapsing. Since I am not a mother, some of the gushing love for one's grown children may have been lost on me, but I can't say I wasn't somewhat swept up in the telling. A true beach read set during a week on the beach.
