Wild Houses has the pacing of a mystery, and there is a problem to solve, but there is no mystery to uncover. It is more of a look into a small Irish town, a few troubled souls, and some mean guys. When Doll English is kidnapped and taken to Dev's house by the Ferdia brothers, everyone is desperate. A feeling of quiet despair and loneliness propels the story. Colin Barrett presents an array of sad, but heartful characters, and writes beautifully. This is his debut novel after being praised for his short stories. I'm sure we'll be reading more from him.
