the wren, the wren - Anne Enright

 

A lovely generational novel where I found the characters both interesting and likable (at least the women). A poet leaves his wife when she is ill. The story revolves around the daughter of the woman left behind and her granddaughter...Carmel and Nell. Set in Ireland, Carmel is retrospective, while Nell is clearly of the present day... young, online, introspective and witty. The poet was a philanderer, and has left his mark on the world. If you get bogged down a little, like I did, keep going...the ending feels good.
