Set in Nigeria, The Death of Vivek Oji is a powerful and poetic story of a family living with their own views of what is real. The novel begins with the death of Vivek, a son whose identity is an enigma to his parents. With his body is left at their front door, they are left to uncover the truth of Vivek's life. As Vivek's creates his life as a woman, Nnemdi, his friends try to warn him/her of danger. In the end, it is a story of love...a parent for a child, for a cousin who is part of the unfolding, and of the love of friends. It is interesting to have just read The Vanishing Half before this, another story of "passing." In these novels the characters truly become the new identities they want the world to see.
