What I Just Read -- A Horse Walks into a Bar by David Grossman
One review I read of "A Horse Walks into a Bar" called it mesmerizing. I would agree. The two hour show that is the whole time-frame of the novel is fraught with pathos, anxiety, and occasionally humor. Dov Greenstein, the comedian who is performing in a basement bar in Israel, is not very good. But the uncovered story of his life leaves not only him, but also us, breathless. While he never becomes truly likable, the writing is a tour-de-force that carries you through his performance to an understanding of the pain that leads to comedy. Also, as the other characters are the audience, the role of the watcher in the making of performance takes your breath away. WOW!
