Our Missing Hearts -- Celeste Ng

One of my colleagues loved this book, but it left me conflicted. On one hand, if I read it as a fable than it worked; but if I tried to believe the story, I was thrown off. I understand the message that racial hatred, bigotry, and thought control are always very close at hand; but the way these characters react gives me pause. Can I believe that a 12 year old can successfully travel from Boston to New York on his own and get to his destination without help? Can I believe in the existence of a poet unwittingly becoming a savior? Not sure. The book was moving, engrossing and disturbing. If I put my doubts aside, I can believe that librarians have the where-with-all to save the world.
