Saint X -- Alexis Schaitkin

A totally engrossing debut novel. I was impressed at how this novel reeled me in and stuck with me. While the story revolved around a young woman who disappears during a family vacation to the imaginary Caribbean island of Saint X, so much more is at play. The mystery of the disappearance underscores the book, but obsession, family, friendships, grief and truth all play a part. The twists and turns of her sister's quest to find out what happened will keep you on the edge of your seat, but it is deeper and more moving than a missing person mystery. While it is a thriller, it is vivid and atmospheric with an eye to class, race, and desire.
