The word I most often used to describe this book while I was reading it was disturbing, but, there is a lot of humanity in the story too. Klara, the "AF," is very sympathetic. Josie, Ricky, Connie and the other characters are all interesting, if not fully revealed. Ishiguro pulls you along step-by-step, much as he did in Never Let Me Go. There are hints of class struggle, religiosity, and the essence of humanity and love, all weaved into the otherworldly tale. In the end, it is hard to tell where the empathy lies, with the humans or with the machines.
