Disappearing Earth -- Julia Phillips
The setting is so different than places I've been. Kamchatka peninsula at the northeastern edge of Russia is cold and remote. Also crooked and impoverished and mostly indigenous. The disappearance of two young girls while their mother is at work sets the story in motion; but characters come and go. The girls are the glue holding the novel together but the strands are far-ranging. Great writing helps to move the plot along, and I really liked the book, but I was left a little confused at what role several of the characters played. Local color abounds.
