The Friend -- Sigrid Nunez
An oddly charming novel. Although grief is the main subject, the life of a writer, the life of a very large dog and the idea of wanting to be alone being nothing abnormal drew me to the main, unnamed character. At times I wondered whether this story was real or a novel the character was working on...and the dream chapter confused me more, when she tells the human friend (who we think has committed suicide) she is writing about him. And let's not forget the grief of Apollo, the dog. He is silent but exceptionally moving. As a meditation on the choices we make in our lives, this was a lovely read.
