The subtitle of The Upstairs Delicatessen is On Eating, Reading, Reading About Eating, and Eating While Reading. That really is what the book is about. By the end I was a little exhausted by quotations from works of literature, but there were moments that had me thinking about the relationships food brings about in our lives, and it was funny. I wish Garner had made it a little more personal, and a little less literary, but all in all, a fast, fun read.
