I had really high hopes for this novel, since I loved The Great Believers, Makkai's last book. But, for me this was a slog. I should have given up, but once I got half way through my curiosity kept me going. The boarding school theme just wasn't my thing, the "me-too" references seemed to get in the way, and the characters never seemed fully formed. The story did hold together and make sense, and I appreciated the mystery. I also ended up having some sympathy for the mess we can be in high school. On the whole, I was a little disappointed.
