The story of the Padilla family in the fictional town on Las Penas, New Mexico, The Five Wounds is full of heart and empathy. The father, Amadeo, is a hapless loser; Angel, the daughter, is earnest, pregnant, rebellious and lonely; while Yolanda, the matriarch, is dying from a brain tumor. The grinding poverty of their community plays out in the background in this novel of lost opportunities, petty grievances, and strong family love. As I read, I rooted for Angel to succeed in her difficult world.
