Crossroads - Jonathan Franzen
There is no doubt the Jonathan Franzen can write. Some books help you to understand critical terms, and Crossroads illustrated the word immersive. I was drawn into the world of the Hildebrandt's, although their world is totally different than mine. They are a supreme example of dysfunctional family. It's hard to say who is the biggest mess, but Russ, the father, is certainly the most detestable. Themes of religion, mid-west values, life in the 1970s, the treatment of women, Native Americans and more odd stuff move the story along. The first of a three part trilogy...I'm not sure I'll go along for the whole ride, but I certainly appreciate Franzen's mastery of the messed up family drama.
