Library Day in the Life

Monday July 27, 2009

7:00 a.m. checking email from home....hate to be surprised first thing Monday morning.

9:00 a.m. up the elevator to the 5th floor. Actually work from the County Administration building, not a library. Have my very own cube, computer, blackberry, ......

9:15 a.m check in with staff--webmaster and system administrator, all had good weekend.

9:15 - 10:30 a.m. meet with Library Director--what's up....Sunday shared staffing hassles, staff phone directory corrections, new standardized phone menu for all 8 libraries, how to reduce computer inventory, repurpose underutilized staff machines for public?--Public Communications liaison stops by--staff not entering library events in County database (ooops on them), Business Center Executive Director (The libraries are part of the Community Services Business Center) stops by--talk about staffing

10:30 - 11:00 a.m. check and respond to emails, send out South County Sunday schedule template for managers to fill out. Forward invite for more folks to see demo of online calendar application on Thursday. Call Telecommunications about implementation of phone menus-Maybe Friday.

11:00 - 12:30 Administration weekly update meeting. Mostly discuss upcoming meeting with library managers to discuss staffing, hours, contractual services.....other stuff....change in loan periods new material, ILL changes. Look at new logos for Born to Read being developed by County graphics department. We all agree on the same one. Woo!

12:30 - 1:30 p.m. more email, leave phone message to manager about critical staffing needs, lunch at desk.

1:30 - 3:45 p.m. meeting with architects, project manager, Library Director, Library Manager, Library Finance at Main Library--subject--ongoing meetings planning renovation of main library. This is fun but challenging. Getting close to final plan. Realize had not included any printer/copiers on 1st floor. How may carrels does a library need? How to stay on schedule? Where to put the computer reservation station? So many questions.

4:00 - 4:30 p.m. check in with staff. Talk about changes to volunteer page on website, new egovernment portal--the tag cloud from delicious looked great--do did the embedded tumblr--cool beans. Again problem running backup over the weekend.

4:30 - 6:00 p.m. Work on Sunday schedules and shared staff schedule to cover at libraries with critical needs. Tricky that! Try to understand authentication questions for new ILL system. Talk to System Admin about decision of how long items stay on the hold shelf. Call library manager about staff unpaid leave request--Library Director reports we got our LSTA GRANT--YEAH! I tell her about a staff member giving notice--BOO HOO! Read over what County needs for overall staffing plan--due on Friday.

6:00 p.m. last 1/2 chat with Library Director--we are all about staffing right now.

6:30 p.m. Head Home.
