The Vulnerables - Sigrid Nunez

Ending 2023 with my fifth pandemic novel, and my fourth book that is full of quotes by other authors. I loved it. A meditation on memories, the art of writing, loneliness, self-absorption, friendship and connections. As the unnamed narrator contemplates what she is writing, along with observing her pandemic situation of pet-sitting a precocious parrot along with an unhappy college student, I was fascinated by her view of the world. Nunez is a "cool" writer, whose characters intellectualize as they write. In some work I would find that annoying, but Nunez's characters are likeable, and their insight opens your eyes. A lovely novel to end the year.
