Small Mercies - Dennis Lehane

A tough, haunting, harrowing, but thoroughly engrossing read about the Irish slums in Boston during the desegregation of the schools in the 1970s. It's a crime story of sorts, but it is also a story of bigotry, poverty, corruption and ignorance. Mary Pat, the main character, is sad, proud and unrelenting in her will to avenge the death of her daughter. The neighbors in the projects, the crime lords, and the young people already schooled in hate, will make your head hurt. A book without a lot of humanity, but a lot to say. I recommend this if you can handle people who take the law into their own hands.
