Purge is a harrowing novel that takes place in Estonia during the Soviet invasion in the 1940's and during the 1990s. The overlapping stories of Aliide, who is now an old woman, and Zara, her niece's daughter, are both full of violence, disappointment, danger and distrust. The novel moves back and forth in time with short chapters, which made me wish I read it in paper, rather than an eBook. Purge was recommended to me because my family is from Latvia and Estonia, but they had left before the 1940's. It's a dark and compelling book with great imagery and complicated characters that I would not have read without the family connection.
