After the Fire -- Henning Mankell
Henning Mankell's last novel After the Fire, is the follow-up to Italian Shoes. Published a year after his death, it is dark and somewhat repetitive, but it is engrossing. The story is not really a mystery, but it has mysterious elements that keep it moving. It is more a contemplation of loneliness and loss, with a faint ray of hope for the future mixed in. As Fredrik Welin, the flawed main character, tries to unravel the mystery of the fires in his community, he travels backwards in time to examine his life. The Guardian says the novel is strange and beguiling, and I would agree.
