A troubling book about disturbed women and damaged men. Like Revolutionary Road, the story is devastating, but not quite as shocking. The two families brought together by chance have no way to find success. Set in the 1940s, it's a bleak read that exhibits Richard Yates ability to portray difficult people and relationships. There is no chance for anyone to redeem themselves as the book switches perspectives from one character to another. This one won't leave you feeling good about the world.
