The Sentence - Louise Erdrich
I think I may have read a Louise Erdrich novel back in the 1980's, but not that I really remember. So, I'm thinking of the "The Sentence" as my first real foray into her work. Although I found the novel a little meandering, I really liked it. Tookie is such an interesting and flawed main character. She wears her dichotomies on her sleeve. As one of the first "pandemic" novels, I found the characters experience of the fear of the early days real and moving. And let's not forget that there are ghosts...real ones. It's also very "bookish," since Tookie works in a bookstore and Erdrich owns one. Encompassing the death of George Floyd, protests, memories, addiction, depression and love, in the end, I'd say it was masterful.
