Homeland Elegies -- Ayad Akhtar

The book jacket says this book is passionate, disturbing and unpottdownable. I'm not sure I agree. I found the main character to be a little insufferable. I did find the book to be pretty engrossing, and I'm sure there was passion, and edginess, but those three adjectives together did not capture my experience. I kept wanting the narrator to lighten up a little and hold some joy for the world. Part memoir and part fiction, the book has a fragmented feeling. I'm glad I read it, since understanding the immigrant experience is such an important part of our culture. But, while being of Pakistani descent is not easy, some softer edges would have been nice and would have rounded out the story for me.
