Cutting for Stone -- Abraham Verghese

Quite the family story. It's been a long time since I let a book carry me totally away for a whole afternoon, but this one did it. The characters were fully drawn and believable (to a point) and the story was engrossing. A tale of twins, medicine, betrayal, love and culture. Shiva/Marion may have been a little over-drawn, but their tale of the bonds between them, was moving. Ghosh, Stone, Hema, all were emotionally and professionally interesting and riveting. Only Genet, the love interest and root of so much pain, was thinly revealed. The book was recommended to me by a doctor, and I can see why he thought it was great, although some of the medicine minutia was a little much for me. This would be great for a plane ride or a few afternoons in bed if you don't feel well.
