Late in the Day -- Tessa Hadley
When I started this novel I did not like the people at all. Privileged, over-educated, self-centered. But, as I kept reading, the characters expanded and the writing flowered. A story of friendship, lust, art and grief. In the end, I couldn't put it down. Domestic drama usually isn't my thing, but Hadley's writing was so deft, I was pulled along. The Washington Post calls Hadley one of greatest stylists alive, and she has also been compared to Virginia Woolf, and I have to agree.
