Sing, Unburied Sing by Jesmyn Ward

Powerful, magical and absorbing, but oh so sad. As the heart of Mississippi poverty, pain and addiction moves through this family and lines are blurred between death and life, reality and visions, family and need. The characters tear at your heart. JoJo trying so hard to be an adult, Kayla trying to find love in a world of darkness. Leonie is so flawed she makes your skin crawl. Paw and Mam have held this world together. As their white father is released from prison the family embarks on a journey that neither brings them together or gives them peace. Again, Jesmyn Ward writes a devastating novel that will stay with me for a long time.
